Building Digital Skills for a Stronger Future in the Rohingya Community
Since its establishment in November 2024, Visionary Youth Labs Academy (VYLA) has been working to equip Rohingya youth with practical digital skills through hands-on training in a dedicated computer lab environment. Located in the Balukhali refugee camp area, near the boundaries of Camps 8W, 9, and 10, the academy was founded with a simple but important vision: to help Rohingya youth build skills that can create opportunities, improve livelihoods, and contribute to the development of the community.
Over the past months, VYLA has trained more than 80 students through its Digital Office Management program. Unlike many learning environments that focus heavily on theory, VYLA emphasizes practical learning. Every student receives direct access to computers and real-world exercises that help them develop confidence and competence in using digital tools.
The training covers Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, and essential internet-based tools that are commonly used in modern workplaces. Students learn document creation, data management, presentations, online collaboration, email communication, software installation, internet research, basic design tools, and introductory freelancing concepts. These are not simply computer lessons; they are foundational skills that prepare students to continue learning in specialized fields and adapt to the demands of today's digital world.
The goal of the academy is not only to teach software but to prepare students for the next stage of their professional development. After gaining these foundational skills, students are better positioned to explore fields such as computer programming, web development, digital marketing, cybersecurity, design, and other technology-related disciplines. By building strong digital literacy first, students can confidently move toward more advanced learning and career opportunities.
Visionary Youth Labs Academy is also significant because it represents a community-led effort. It is among the first practical computer training labs established and operated by a Rohingya IT professional specifically for Rohingya youth inside the refugee camp setting. The initiative was created with the belief that skills and education are among the most effective tools for addressing poverty, unemployment, and long-term social challenges.
Many young people possess talent, ambition, and determination, but lack access to practical learning opportunities. VYLA seeks to bridge that gap by providing a structured environment where students can learn, practice, and develop the discipline necessary for personal and professional growth.
The future of any community depends on the capabilities of its youth. As technology continues to shape economies and societies around the world, digital skills are becoming increasingly important for education, employment, entrepreneurship, and communication. By investing in these skills today, Rohingya youth can become better prepared for the opportunities and challenges of tomorrow.
At Visionary Youth Labs Academy, the mission remains clear: to help young people build practical skills, strengthen their confidence, and create pathways toward meaningful work and long-term development. Through learning, dedication, and continuous improvement, every student has the potential to contribute not only to their own future but also to the future of the wider Rohingya community.
